“The night walked down the sky with the moon in her hand.”
—Frederick L. Knowle
Have you ever sat in the bathhouse, enveloped by steamy, hot springs and watched the moonrise through the silhouettes of pine trees? Perhaps you’ve relaxed in the “talking tub” while searching the depths of a bedazzled night to make a wish on a shooting star. This month brings us a full moon on the 10th; the new moon on the 24th heralds the darkest skies of the month. The Leonid Meteor shower peaks on November 17 and is best seen before moonrise. Simply sky-gazing…one of the many ways to slow down here at Wilbur where the nights are quiet, the skies are dark and stars shine brightly. Sweet dreams!

Watch for us on November 8th as “Eye On the Bay,” the Emmy Award winning magazine-style show, features Wilbur along the tour of Capay Valley! That’s on San Francisco Channel 5 and the video will be online here soon after.

Martha, a lifelong artist, art teacher and Locke, CA studio/gallery owner hosts exciting, fun paint-outs with guided drawing and painting exercises for artists of all skill levels. Participate in some, or all of our group activities, including: hiking, soaking, stretching, painting, critiquing and star gazing at Wilbur. For more information, please visit Martha’s blog.
Due to the popularity of Active Stretching at Wilbur, Diane will be presenting a two-part AIS workshop this weekend. Saturday will be lower body (hips, legs and feet) + torso; Sunday will be upper body (shoulders, hands & neck) + torso. Each session is 3 1/2 hrs* starting at 11am. Singularly each class is $60 - together they are $100 (better for your budget & your body!) Active Isolated Stretching (AIS) is the next wave of flexibility training. No pain, lots of gain. By honoring our body’s natural reflexes, we are able to gently open our range of motion and elasticize our tissues. Diane will be teaching at Esalen in Spring of 2012, and has been sharing the magic of AIS with Wilbur guests this year. Diane will also be available for one-on-one sessions in the evening. For workshop info and registration contact Diane at (415) 40 7-3874, or visit her website (please contact Wilbur Hot Springs to reserve your room).
This complementary class on the yoga deck with Pnina will help you see your world with less strain, greater acuity, and a more spacious visual field. You will learn special exercises for the eyes such as summing, palming, shifting periphery movement and more.
“I first met Pnina at an introductory workshop at Wilbur Hot Springs. I learned from just one session that with a few simple techniques, I can feel better and see more clearly. I was so impressed with the results, I invited my family and friends to my home for a personalized session so they too could start learning about Eye Yoga. It is easy and fun to do with results by the end of one session.” —Beth M.
For more information about Pnina, visit her website or contact her at (415) 342-3007.

NOTES FROM THE CARETAKER
Dear Friends of Wilbur:
This is the month that many of us take special time to give thanks. No matter what our mental, emotional, spiritual condition, we each have something to be thankful for and that is the gift of life.
Life is the great mystery for we do not know where we came from and we have only guesses as to where, if anywhere, we go next. And, yet, here we are. Some of us struggle and some live lives of convenience, but we all share the gift of life.
From a business perspective the gift of life is a depreciating asset in that every day we live brings us a day closer to the end of the gift. From a spiritual perspective our gift grows every day as we continue to evolve and expand.
I offer you my thanks for your gift of supporting this Sanctuary called Wilbur Hot Springs. It is because of each of you that Wilbur remains open.
Thank you.

Well, another successful Closedown has taken place over the past few weeks, and we’re ready to show it off. Thanks to a talented, and dedicated team of volunteer workers, carpenters, chefs and staff, we transformed the space yet again, making it fresh and clean, as we do each and every year at this time. You’ll notice some new features and enhancements to the Hotel, and recognize old, familiar things made new again. We think you’ll like the upgrades, subtle changes and the freshness of it all. Thanks to all who participated in making, and sustaining this unique place of healing waters, land and community we call Wilbur Hot Springs.

Do you want to take your yoga practice to the next level? Are you active in the world, yet also want a deeper spiritual practice to give you balance, joy, and clarity even in the midst of the challenges we all face? Do you want to step up your service in the world, and do that from a place of joy, love, balance, and clarity rather than one of anger and judgment? This workshop can serve you no matter what your level of yoga practice and service in the world.
Yoga and meditation provide us with the tools to open to the Divine Consciousness of Oneness. We can learn to embody this awareness through the practice of transforming fear, rigidity, and the ‘disease of disconnect’, and thus reclaim the wholeness and sacred interconnection of all life.
In this workshop, we will use meditation, chanting, and yoga (led by Sarana) and dialogue and reflection (facilitated by Julia) to explore how we can take the gifts and tools we learn in yoga and meditation and apply them toward making a difference in our own lives and in the world. With this embodied awareness, you will leave inspired and moved into conscious action, with a deeper connection to yourself, the community, and the world.

Dear Friends of Wilbur:
Just prior to writing this, I opened a personal letter from Carolyn, a long time Wilburite, telling me how important Wilbur has been to her health throughout her adult life. She arrived at Wilbur, as a resident artist, the same year Richard and Ezzie arrived as General Managers, in 1988. Her letter produced many sweet tears and deep smiles.
Reading Carolyn’s letter gave me pause regarding what I had originally planned to write you about. Her letter served to remind me that this newsletter is about Wilbur and is not meant to be used by me as a vehicle for my political commentary. And so, suffice to say, for those wishing to hear why I think the United States is engaged in an Undeclared Civil War go to my web site: MindBodyHealthPolitics.org and listen to the August 16th pod cast.
It is Closedown time at Wilbur and this is the most exciting, complicated, Closedown in Wilbur history. The Hotel and Red House are getting new paint with brand new decoration. The side entrances are becoming real entrances with awnings to match the trim color, toilets and sinks added to two of the rooms, and, while not a Closedown event, Franklin’s Retreat, provided for those of you with canines, is getting spruced up. I am researching tricycles and quadracycles for potential use at Wilbur. Picture yourselves driving through the Nature Preserve on a two person quadracycle.
Closedowners form a unique community of their own and some of the folks working Closedown have been doing it for 17 years. The close down food itself is a huge draw for It is like Guest Chef week end every day of the week. You can work close down and earn gift certificates for use during the year.
Paying guest, resident artist, close downer—many roads lead to Wilbur.
See you soon at Wilbur. Say hello to the real tall guy with the big friendly smile and soft eyes.
Richard

Seems like a mild summer (thus far). How about a bike ride in our 1800 acre Nature Preserve or nearby Bear Valley followed by a steamy soak in our naturally occurring hot mineral springs? August 12th & 13th is the peak of the renowned Perseids Meteor shower. Wilbur is the perfect place to view the show, although there will be some serious competition from the full moon of August 13. The full moon illuminates the hills for a magical midnight stroll. New moon affords the best sky-watching on and around August 28. Far away from the city lights, we have the most amazing views!

Dear Friends of Wilbur:
It is with many deep emotions that I write to inform you that Richard and Ezzie Davis, who have managed Wilbur with loyalty, dedication and love, for the past 23 years, are retiring. The three of us have become close friends over the years and I have spent many a night dining at their home and sharing stories of Wilbur and our lives. All of our families have been to Wilbur coming from far and wide. It is really hard to believe that a day will arrive when Richard and Ezzie will not always be on the grounds for me to meet with and hang out with. However, both Richard and Ezzie will continue working with Wilbur in various ways.
Many years ago, I thought that if Richard and Ezzie ever leave I will sell Wilbur and move on myself. However, that view has changed as Wilbur Hot Springs and its Nature Preserve have become my legacy. When it is my time to step aside, my daughter, Sarana, will take over the stewardship. My younger daughter, Evacheska, may join her.
Please spread the word that we are looking for a couple to take over the on site management of Wilbur. It is a dream come true job for those wanting this special kind of lifestyle. Applicants please send a detailed letter of interest directly to me at: DrRichardLMiller@gmail.com.
Wishing you good health,
Richard

Warm summer nights floating in the pool under a blanket of stars. July 1st brings us a new moon which affords optimal sky watching. July 15, the full moon illuminates pathways for a moonlit stroll without a flashlight. The Delta Aquariid Meteor Shower peaks on July 29. The waning crescent moon presents no obstructions to viewing. The trail of meteors are remnants of a comet that no longer exists, but it gives some of us a little thrill to “wish upon a shooting star.”

Half Off Wednesdays are back for July and August! Stay two nights, including a Wednesday night, in a room of equal value, and receive 50 percent off the Wednesday. Not valid during holiday periods or combinable with other discounts.
And….
This month, we feature Thai practitioner, Robert De Nies
About six years ago when I applied to do bodywork at Wilbur Hot Springs, I wrote in my resume: “My goal is to do some of my best work at Wilbur.” While it may have sounded good at the time, it has actually come true. This is through not only my own dedication to the craft, but from an unusual synergy of circumstance. Karen Kingston, a well known feng shui expert, talks a lot about providing a healing space. She writes, and I paraphrase: “Ninety percent of your work as a healer should already be done when the client enters the space.” At Wilbur, we have that space! By the time I see a client, they have soaked in the mineral-laden springs, gotten quiet, their cell phones are turned off, and they do not have to get back in their cars. This way, they can be fully present for our session. Similarly, I as a massag e provider have done my work; a soak, some breathing practices, a little yoga. Now we are ready to do something special together! During your next visit to Wilbur, I encourage you to connect with a massage provider you feel drawn to and let the waters, the environment, and the bodywork touch you on a deep level.
Robert de Nies practices Thai Yoga Massage at Wilbur Hot Springs. Visit him at BodyMindWork.com, where you can read more and get his Wilbur schedule.
Thanks for scheduling your massage when you reserve your room.

Dear Friends of Wilbur:
In 1972 when I first visited Wilbur Hot Springs, the pull of the land, the waters and nature was so great, that, in 1974, I gave up my successful clinic on Sacramento Street in San Francisco, and moved to Wilbur full time. I also had enough of the fear-driven socioeconomic stratification that was being created in our country, and I wanted out of the system. I knew from childhood experience that in the game of monopoly, the person who gets Board Walk and Park Place, and a few other choice properties, ends the game with all the money on the table and that was clearly the direction our country was headed.
In 1980, I came out of Wilbur, full of high energy, to turn back the cocaine epidemic which killed my friend, Roberta, whom I had met at Wilbur and who had met her husband at Wilbur.
Some of you may remember, that I then created the Cokenders Alcohol and Drug Program (CADP) which brought holistic health into national drug treatment. Instead of taking my profoundly addicted patients to an institutional hospital, I brought them to Wilbur, one week per month, for an intensive week of residential treatment and education. During their one week, they participated in 30 hours of group therapy, which I personally led, and received nutrition training, aerobic training, meditation training, cognitive training, Yoga and massage. In addition to the loving atmosphere created by my staff, Wilbur’s healing waters (balneology) served as the detoxification medicine. In the 1980s, I detoxed approximately 1500 people from all combinations of licit and illicit drugs without hospitalizing or medicating one person. We eventually turned the spreading cocaine epidemic. Of course other drugs, called prescription medication, stepped in and there was created an ep idemic of prescription drug abuse, which is now inter generational and pervasive.
In the 1990s, I took the structure of the Cokenders Alcohol and Drug Program and designed personal private residential treatment programs which I have been conducting these past 20 years. My patients live on my property for various periods of time ranging from one week to one year. My research indicates that this intensive residential treatment yields significant and dramatic results which are difficult, if not impossible, to achieve in traditional office visits.
In the Fall of 2011, I shall launch a new health program at Wilbur Springs. The program will include consultations, consciousness expansion, nutrition, exercise, balneology, Nature Preserve experience, personal reflection, massage, yoga, journal writing and art. Also, a lifestyle changing weight loss program is on the drawing board.
Of course Wilbur will remain open to all of you for joyously “doing your own thing.”
Wishing you great health,
Richard
